Valerie Robinson MNZM —
Member of the New Zealand
Order of Merit —
has been recognised in the New Year
Honours
for
her
outstanding
contribution to sport.
Known to many as Val Robinson, she
is a highly accomplished New Zealand
sportswoman, with an impressive
career as a multi–New Zealand
champion athlete and a lifelong
contributor to the development of
orienteering, particularly among young
people.
Born Valerie Tantrum, Val Robinson
grew up in Kaiwaka and attended local
schools. She began her sporting
journey with the Kaiwaka Athletic
Club, where her early talent was
evident. A treasured photograph (above) from 1956 shows Val
competing in the broad jump at the Kaiwaka Athletics Day.
Robinson went on to become one of New Zealand
’
s leading
athletes, competing at the highest levels. Her achievements
include representing New Zealand at the 1970 Commonwealth
Games in Edinburgh, where she placed sixth in the women
’
s
1500 metres.
In the early 1970s, Val and her husband John Robinson —
also
a life member and former national coach —
became involved in
the then
-
emerging sport of orienteering. Robinson was a
member of the first New Zealand team to attend an Orienteering
World Championships, held in Scotland in 1976.
While her competitive achievements were significant, Robinson
is perhaps best known for her tireless work developing
orienteering at grassroots level. She has been a passionate
advocate for youth participation, particularly in the Counties
Manukau
region,

WEATHER
DECEMBER and 2025
I trust you have all had a reasonably
good start to 2026.
It didn
’
t seem like it but December at
our place was quite a wet month. The
days between the rainy days were very
hot and drying.
Over ten days I
recorded 107.5ml
. Most of the rain fell
either in the beginning of the month or
near the end of the month.
Derek, Hakaru, recorded
74ml for the
month of December over 15 days
.
The amount of rain recorded at our
place for the year of
2025 was
1936.5m
l and Derek recorded
1645ml
in the Hakaru Valley.
The
highest amount recorded in any
one year at our place was in 2023
with a total of 2883ml recorded over
199
days.
The least annual rainfall recorded at
our place was in
2015 when I
recorded 1008.5ml over 97 days
.
Until next month, please take care
.

RURAL YOUTH AND ADULT
LITERACY TRUST
You
’
re probably not actively thinking about how great it is
to be able to read this right now.
Unfortunately, approximately one in ten Kiwis struggle
with literacy on a daily basis.
Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT) works hard to
make this shameful statistic a thing of the past by providing
online coaching and support. Despite receiving no government funding, RYALT
provides teaching specifically tailored to those that find writing and reading
difficult in isolated areas. Amazing volunteer coaches around the country
regularly connect with students to provide skilled assistance to those in need.
In Kaiwaka and other rural areas, it is sadly all too common for those with low
literacy to employ work
-
around tactics, trying to avoid the regrettable stigma.
This
depresses
self
-
worth,
reduces social mobility and can
prevent independence.
RYALT
’
s super team of
volunteers receive training to
aid in supporting students with a
diverse set of needs. Many
students have dyslexia or had to
leave school at a young age to
care for family members.
‘
I

m really passionate about
RYALT

s cause, and love
spreading the word as a

GROUNDED WELLNESS, LOCAL CARE:
Meet Scott of SK Massage
In a small rural community like ours, looking after yourself often comes second
to looking after everything else. That
’
s where SK Massage, based at Takahoa Bay
in Kaiwaka, offers something quietly valuable —
a local place to slow down,
reconnect, and take care of your wellbeing.
Scott, the therapist behind SK Massage, is a New Zealand
-
trained and qualified
Swedish massage therapist and allied health practitioner. His approach is
professional yet down
-
to
-
earth, combining skilled massage therapy with a
genuine focus on the whole person —
not just tight muscles or sore spots.
Rather than offering a one
-
size
-
fits
-
all treatment, Scott works with each client to
understand what
’
s happening in their body and life. His philosophy is simple:
when the mind, body, and energy are supported together, people feel more
balanced, grounded, and able to move through life with greater ease.
SK Massage offers a range of tailored treatments, including relaxation massage,
deep tissue work, myofascial release, pregnancy massage, and hot stone therapy.
Sessions range from short 30
-
minute treatments to longer, more immersive
sessions, allowing clients to choose what best suits their needs and schedule.
Open Sunday through Thursday 10:30
-
5pm, bookings can be made online or via
text message.
Clients often comment on the calm, welcoming atmosphere and Scott
’
s ability to
listen and adapt each session
accordingly.
Whether
you
’
re
managing the physical demands of
rural work, feeling the effects of
stress, or simply wanting some time to
reset, SK Massage provides thoughtful
care close to home.
Located at Takahoa Bay, SK Massage
is proud to serve Kaiwaka and
surrounding Kaipara communities,
offering a local space dedicated to
rest, recovery, and wellbeing.

Her leadership and service to the sport
have been widely recognised. Val and
John Robinson donated trophies for the

championships in
1987, which continue to be contested
today. She received the Services to
New Zealand Orienteering Award in
2002 and was named Coach of the Year
in both 1994 and 2011. In 2019, she
was made a Life Member of
Orienteering New Zealand and also
holds life membership with the Counties Manukau Orienteering Club.
Orienteering has been a family passion, with Robinson
’
s daughter Tania going on
to become a world

class orienteer in her own right.
Val Robinson is widely respected for her dedication, humility and commitment to
ensuring the long

FRIENDS KEEP ON MOVING!
Kaiwaka Scottish Country Dancers keep dancing over summer but
mainly to see their friends in a social setting
. Yes, they know it
’
s good for
their brains and bodies, but that falls into insignificance
with the bonds of friendship formed through this form
of social dancing.
●
Have you recently moved to the area or found
yourself with more time on your hands?
●
Has your child recently started school and you
want to find new interests?
●
Do you home school your children and need
physical activities for them to help them socialise?
Come to the Kaiwaka Memorial Hall on Wednesday
28th January
and
try out if Scottish Country
Dancing is for you.
Starting in February we are doing a 6 week beginners
course to help you gain
understanding of the patterns at a pace that works for you.
These classes will be from 9.30 to 11.00 every Wednesday, including a coffee
break socialising with the whole club.
You don
’
t need a partner or special equipment, just come along in soft,
comfortable shoes and join in the fun. Your first visit is free. We have dancers
from Warkworth, Mangawhai and Waipu so if you need to share transport text or
phone Elaine on 0274320032 or email Kaiwaka@dancescottish.org.nz
We look forward to welcoming you into our friendly supportive group.
Think about it
….
exercising without realising it whilst having fun with lifelong
friends.

sensory needs, and reviewing our school policies and procedures together.
Our
students return on Monday 2nd of February
, and we
’
ll start the day with
a powhiri to warmly welcome all our new students, whanau, and staff. The pool

PRIZE GIVING
We ended 2025 on a high note with a
wonderful Prize Giving
, celebrating our
students

special by a
beautiful quilt, lovingly created by Renea Campbell from our old
Kapa Haka uniforms
, and the addition of native trees from Rural Design (as
seen on stage at the Prizegiving in the KWMH). It was a truly memorable
occasion
-
thank you to everyone who helped make it so special!

re thrilled about the
building projects happening this year
!
Not only are we getting a
brand

Table program, assemblies, and Kapa
Haka practices, and it
’
s conveniently located near our orchard and veggie garden.
We
’
re aiming to have everything ready by July, so keep an eye out for our
celebration! Reading and a love of books are at the heart of our school, and our
new library will inspire our children on their reading journey.
We
’
re looking forward to a fantastic 2026 together!
Please feel free to contact us or join in the fun
-
we
’
d love to have you involved!

LIFE ENERGY SOLUTIONS
David and Margie Slinger have moved
their home and

amazing results which brought new insights and hope to all.
David and Margie state that they have only just scratched the
surface of endless possibilities for healing and health issues

BOOK REVIEWS
Liz has recommended a couple of books recently. She writes...
Dancing with Bees by Anna Maynard
-
An easy, absorbing read with real
substance, Dancing with Bees is a love story
-
but it
’
s also about life, friendship,
family, and what happens when you lose your way and quietly begin to find it
again. Anna Maynard
’
s character development is particularly beautiful, making
the story feel intimate and genuine rather than rushed. As a debut novel, it shows
great depth and confidence and leaves you looking forward to what this author
writes next.
Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen
-
Described as Fourth
Wing meets The Hunger Games,
Dire Bound is the first
book in the Wolves of Ruin series
and a fast
-
paced dark
romantasy. The story follows Meryn Cooper, a strong,
determined young woman bound to a feral dire wolf who
refuses to communicate, in a world where everything is a
competition and everyone has something to hide. With
fierce characters, sharp banter and high stakes where
failure is not an option, Dire Bound is a great pick for fans
of action
-
driven fantasy romance.
My latest read was
When The Moon Hits Your Eye by
John Scalzi
. Scalzi has put an awful lot of thought into the
consequences of the moon turning to cheese! And the result
is an hilarious tale that kept me entertained from start to finish. If you've been
curious about science fiction but didn't quite know where to start, this would be a
very soft introduction to that genre that will make you laugh. Scalzi says he's
getting back into space with aliens and spaceships with his next book, and I look
forward to that, but in the meantime, he's had this lovely little interlude with The
Kaiju Preservation Society, Starter Villains, and now this one, which have all
been fantastic
-
if
-
a
-
little
-
ridiculous reads.
All of the books mentioned here are on the shelves in our
library. Place a hold in the library app or in Enterprise*, to
have it put aside for you to collect.
